21st century
In the 11th century, Guy 1st built a fortress along an ancient route crossing the Mayenne river.
Not much remains of the original motte castle.
While the ruins of the former seignorial residence can still be seen in the courtyard, the main building has been considerably transformed over time.
Today, the castle proudly dominates the town from which it originated…
Whether it’s a virtual tour, a climb up the keep and its spiral staircase, or a “spelunking” tour that takes you under the current museum, the castle can be discovered in many different ways.
The guide will adapt to your curiosity, and will be sure to share with you the riches of this emblematic monument.
Climbing 60 steps wasn’t easy
but clearly worth the detour
This is undoubtedly THE most exceptional view in town.
Stroll along the hoardings and fill your phone with unforgettable photos!
Built in the 12th century, the chapel was part of an expansion of the château, marked by the use of stone. A large rectangular building was erected in the upper courtyard, overlooking the river Mayenne. The building can now be divided into three areas: the aula (reception room, dedicated to welcoming visitors), the camera (private room) and the capella.
Decorated in the Romanesque tradition, the chapel’s cross vaults are supported by columns, some of which were probably salvaged from nearby ancient sites (e.g., the Entrammes thermal baths).
Occasionally transformed into a funerary crypt, the chapel now houses the mummy of Anne d’Alègre, Countess of Laval, who died in the early 17th century. This lady, married at 20, a mother at 21 and widowed at 22 (!), was refused access to the family necropolis because of her Protestant faith.
